10 Steps to Start Your Own Business
Step 1: Sign up with Ideal Goodness.
Step 2: Choose a business name.
Step 3: Open a new checking account at your bank. Do not use a business checking account as they are often more expensive and have additional reports that are not needed for a small business. Use a free personal checking account with a DBA "business name" as the name. Use this account ONLY for business purposes. All deposits should be business revenue and all checks should be business expenses.
Step 4: Develop a method for tracking and recording all expenses and retaining documentation, invoices and receipts. You can use a shoe box or a sophisticated computer. The goal is proper tax compliance and detail record keeping is all that is required regardless of the system.
Step 5: Print out a Schedule C from the IRS website and be familiar with the types of business expenses available.
Step 6: Purchase a dedicated phone line or mobile phone for business use (or track the portion of your personal phone that you use for business).
Step 7: Purchase a new computer (or track the portion of your personal computer that you use for business).
Step 8: Purchase a daily log book to record all business-related mileage and keep it in your car. Every mile driven in the pursuit of business activities is a $.50 expense on your Schedule C.
Step 9: Subscribe to an online service provider (or track the portion of your existing service that you use for business).
Step 10: Purchase business cards with your business name, mobile phone and email address.
